The memoirs of George S. MacDonell is a story of the triumph of the human spirit over a sea of misfortunes.
His is the story of a teenage soldier who ran away from home, lied about his age and enlisted at the age of 17 to serve in the Canadian army, the day after the war with Germany broke out. He was one of 2000 soldiers who acted with honour and distinction on the battlefield of Hong Kong. One of the first to enter the war, he was among the last to return home, his health broken but his spirit undefeated by what he had been forced to endure for four years as a Japanese Prisoner of War.
